Roky Erickson Psychedelic Ice Cream Social; setlist incomplete
Sorry it's taken so long to report this: I had my own Robyn "birthday"
performance (a week before my birthday actually) here in Austin a
couple of weeks ago. I didn't catch his SXSW shows, but he and Peter,
Bill, and Sean Nelson played a short set at Roky Erikson's Psychedelic
Ice Cream Social in the midst of the festival, and it was a great
time. It was like an all day show in someone's backyard, with grass to
sit on and free ice cream and not crowded at all.
I nearly bumped into Peter on my way to get something to drink, he'd
just arrived and had set his guitar case down by the entrance to the
yard where I was going through, and he apologized in such a
self-deprecating way that it took me a second to recognize him. I told
him, "That's quite alright!" because of course I was thrilled. Robyn
came through a couple minutes later, for which I am grateful because I
would have had a hard time maintaining any sort of composure if it'd
been him instead.
Between songs Robyn looked up to glare a couple of times at the
grackles (big, black, noisy, bothersome birds we have in large amounts
here) in the trees making their raspy, screeching sounds, and he
looked like he had something uncomplimentary to say about them, but he
went ahead and started a song instead. They did Adventure Rocketship,
Underground Sun, Queen of Eyes, and at least three or four others but
my memory's faded. Banter was good, mention of "normals", and
practically no blinking! He wore a fantastic white shirt with small
black figures all over it, some like puzzle pieces.
It was great to see Robyn outdoors, it made up for my feeling a bit
cursed that Robyn usually only comes to Austin for SXSW. The chaos of
so many people here for that makes getting to shows (and getting into
shows) pretty difficult.
